The great white shark specimen (Carcharodon carcharias) preserved at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale “Giacomo Doria” in Genoa was caught in the Gulf of Genoa in the early twentieth century. Currently displayed along the staircase leading to the first floor, it provides historical evidence of the species' presence in the Ligurian Sea. The great white shark exhibits distinctive countershading, with a dark upper body and a white underside separated by a sharply defined, irregular boundary. This colour pattern serves as camouflage: viewed from above, the shark blends with the darker depths of the sea, while its pale underside makes it less conspicuous against the brighter water surface when seen from below. This adaptation helps the animal approach prey from different directions and supports its predatory strategies.
